
Stop the Shattering: A Better Way to Handle Glass Tube Annealing
Let’s be honest: inline annealing is usually the part of the production line that gives everyone a headache. It’s the bottleneck. If you can’t nail the cooling rate for your quartz or borosilicate glass the second it’s formed, you’re looking at internal stress. And internal stress means tubes shattering. Not exactly the result we’re after. We use fast-response infrared (IR) lamps to fix this. They kick out instant thermal energy, which keeps the glass in that “plastic” state without forcing you to crawl your conveyor belt along at a snail’s pace.
Why IR actually works
Typical resistive heaters are just too slow. They take forever to ramp up. We switched to short-wave infrared because it hits the target temperature in seconds. It lets you keep a really tight temperature gradient across the surface of the tube. The best part? You’re putting the energy directly into the glass, not wasting it by heating up all the air around it. Less wasted heat means you can push your line faster. Simple as that.
The gear and the setup
We build these lamps with high-purity quartz envelopes. They have to be; otherwise, they couldn’t handle the extreme heat density needed for proper annealing. Most of our units use standard R7s or SK15 connectors. We did this on purpose so they just slide right into your existing setup. We also pushed for a high wattage-per-centimeter ratio, which keeps the rest of the hardware small and out of the way.
A few warnings for the engineers
Here is the thing: high-density IR lamps dump a massive amount of heat into the machine frame. You can’t just wire these in and walk away. If your cooling system isn’t beefy enough to handle the rise in ambient temperature inside the oven housing, you’re going to fry your control electronics. Then there’s the power. This kind of speed demands a lot of juice. You need a rock-solid voltage supply. If your power flickers, you get “cold spots” on the glass, and your annealing quality goes right down the drain. Get your electricals sorted first. Then install the lamps.
