
Why Your Glass Annealing Isn’t Consistent
Ever notice how one batch of glass comes out perfect, but the next has weird stress spots? It’s frustrating. You check your oven controller, and everything looks fine on the screen. But here’s the thing: the controller isn’t usually the problem. The real culprit is almost always your IR lamps. If your lamps are off by even 5% or 10% in their wattage or output, your glass isn’t heating evenly. You get “cold spots,” and that’s where the trouble starts.
Why we stick with clear quartz
We use high-purity clear quartz for our tubes for a simple reason: it gets the heat where it needs to go. Some tubes have coatings that bounce heat back toward the filament. Not these. Clear quartz lets that short-wave infrared radiation hit the glass directly. It’s faster. Much faster. But the real magic is in how we wind the filament. If the tungsten coil pitch shifts even a tiny bit, the resistance changes. We keep those tolerances incredibly tight. Why? Because we want every single tube in your array to pull the exact same current. If one tube decides to run hotter than the rest, you’re looking at localized overheating. And that’s a fast track to thermal shock or those annoying optical distortions.
The “Mixed Batch” Trap
I see this all the time: a shop will replace lamps one by one as they burn out, or mix and match different brands. Don’t do that. Even if an old lamp and a new lamp are both rated for 2kW, they don’t “breathe” the same way. Their emission curves are different. This leaves you with a patchy heat map across your rack or conveyor. If you want a uniform thermal footprint, replace them in full sets. It’s the only way to be sure.
A word of caution
These high-consistency tubes are precise, but they’re also a bit temperamental. Since clear quartz doesn’t have a protective coating, it hates contaminants. A single fingerprint or a smudge of oil is enough to create a hot spot. Once that happens, the quartz can crack under the stress. So, please—use lint-free gloves. Keep the area clean. It feels like a chore, but it’s a lot easier than dealing with a premature burn-out.
