Glass annealing is all about precision, but let’s be honest—it can be a total headache. You’ve probably been there: you run a batch, and everything looks fine on paper, but the actual results are all over the place. You get internal stress, weird cooling patterns, or those annoying optical distortions that ruin a piece. Most people start by messing with the oven timers or tweaking the conveyor speed. But here’s the thing: the problem usually isn’t the machine’s settings. It’s the lamps.
The Problem With “Standard” Heaters
Here is the dirty secret about most quartz heaters: they have a power tolerance of ±5% or even ±10%. That sounds small, but in a big annealing lehr, it’s a disaster. Think about it. If one lamp is pushing out 1000W and the one right next to it is hitting 1100W, you’ve just created a hot spot. We decided to fix that by getting obsessive about the details. We tighten the tolerances on the tungsten filament diameter and use higher-purity quartz tubes. The goal? Every single lamp in the array puts out the exact same wattage. When that happens, your temperature profile flattens out. You can finally stop guessing why the left side of your batch is annealing faster than the right. It just works.
The Trade-off: Heat and Hardware
We use high-purity fused quartz because it can handle the brutal thermal shock of rapid cycling. These lamps send out shortwave radiation that sinks into the glass quickly, which is great for efficiency. But a word of caution: high heat density puts a lot of pressure on your gear. If you go for a high-wattage array to speed things up, just make sure your electrical panels and wiring can actually handle the peak current. Nobody wants a burnout halfway through a shift.

When you switch to heaters that actually behave the same way, your scrap pile shrinks. Fast. You stop fighting your equipment just to get a uniform finish. Because the IR output stays steady, the annealing curve is the same for the first piece as it is for the last. It takes a process that usually feels like a gamble and makes it predictable.
