
Why Your Infrared Heaters Keep Shorting Out (and How to Stop It)
Here is the honest truth: most waterproof infrared table heaters fail in the exact same spot. It’s always that tiny junction where the lead wire meets the heating element. It happens because high heat is brutal. Standard potting compounds—the stuff used to seal the wires—tend to shrink or crack when things get hot. Once that seal pops, moisture sneaks in. Then you get oxidation, the insulation gives up, and boom: a short circuit.
The “Spec Sheet” Trap
I’ve seen plenty of heaters that look identical on paper. Same watts, same size, same price. But one lasts years and the other dies in three months. The secret is in the sealing. Cheap builds rely on basic silicone. The problem? That stuff burns out when the heater constantly switches between cold and scorching hot. We do things differently. We use industrial-grade sealants that actually hold their grip, no matter how many times the temperature swings. If you use a sealant that can’t handle the heat, it carbonizes. And since carbon conducts electricity, it creates a little “bridge” for the current to leak. That’s how you end up with a ground fault.
The Battle Against Wear and Tear
Lead wires take a beating. They are constantly expanding and contracting, which puts a lot of physical stress on the seal. If the transition isn’t molded perfectly, the wire eventually just pulls away from the sealant. We spend a lot of time obsessing over the gap between the quartz tube and the lead-in wire. We make sure there are zero air pockets. Why? Because air pockets create hot spots, and hot spots eat through wire insulation fast.
A Quick Word of Advice
There is a trade-off here. A really strong, robust seal makes the lead wire a bit more rigid. It’s tougher, but it doesn’t like to bend. If you try to force these wires into a sharp angle right at the seal, you’ll probably crack the potting. To avoid that, just make sure your wiring loom has a bit of slack. Give the wire some room to breathe, and that high-grade seal will do its job for a long, long time.
