
Why Your Outdoor Heaters Keep Dying (And How We Fix It)
If you’ve ever run a bar patio, you know the drill. Your heaters are out there fighting a losing battle against rain, humidity, and those brutal temperature swings that happen overnight. Most people think the heating element is what gives out first. It’s not. The real disaster happens at the lead-wire—that tiny spot where the wire meets the quartz tube.
The “Bake and Crack” Problem
Here is the thing: a lot of cheap heaters just use basic glue or some heat-shrink tubing to hold things together. That works for a while. But these lamps get incredibly hot. That heat basically bakes the sealant until it gets brittle and cracks. Once you have a crack, you’re in trouble. Moisture seeps in. The wires oxidize. And then, one night, the whole thing just shorts out. We do things differently. We use high-temp silicone potting and ceramic beads to create a seal that actually holds. It stops the “wicking” effect—which is just a fancy way of saying it keeps water from traveling up the wire and frying your electrical housing.
Getting the Seal Right
You can’t just slap some epoxy on and call it a day. First, we strip the wire to a very specific length so the conductive core is totally covered. Then, we use a high-density, heat-resistant epoxy. The key here is that it doesn’t shrink when it cures. Cheap seals tend to pull away from the glass. Our bond stays tight, even when the tube expands during a massive 1000W heat cycle. If that seal gaps even a little bit, you get carbon tracking. And that’s a fast track to a blown fuse—or worse, a fire.
The Trade-off
Now, there is a catch. Proper waterproofing adds a bit of bulk. A heavily potted lead-wire takes up more room, so you can’t just cram these into a tiny, tight chassis. You need a bit more clearance in your housing. But if your heaters live outside year-round, it’s a no-brainer. It’s the difference between a heater that lasts two seasons and one that burns out in three months.
