
Why Fast-Response IR is the Way to Go for Online Glass Annealing
If you’re running a glass production line, you know the pain: you can’t just stop everything for batch annealing. Doing that kills your throughput. To get rid of internal stress without pausing the clock, you need heat that hits the target instantly and disappears just as fast. That’s where shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps come in. Honestly, they’re the only real way to handle this while keeping the glass moving.
The magic of rapid heat
Most old-school furnaces rely on convection—basically heating the air around the glass. SWIR is different. It uses radiation, which means the heat travels at the speed of light and hits the glass surface directly. We use high-wattage quartz elements that reach peak temperature in milliseconds. It’s nearly instant. This is a huge deal when you’re speeding up your line. If you suddenly switch to a thicker piece of glass or crank up the conveyor speed, you just tweak the controller. You’ll see the effect on the glassright then and there. No waiting around for a giant oven to catch up.
Getting the heat profile right
When we talk about online stress relief, it’s all about heat density. We pack a ton of wattage into a tiny footprint. This creates a precise “hot zone” that targets the glass without melting your conveyor system. But here’s the catch: these lamps are incredibly intense. Because they pump out so much energy so quickly, your housing has to be spot on. You need high-grade reflectors to push that heat downward. If your reflectors get pitted or dirty, you’re wasting energy. Worse, you get uneven annealing, and that’s how you end up with glass breaking further down the line.

The best part? Putting IR lamps in your line gets rid of the bottleneck created by traditional lehrs. You can just wire these units into your existing PLC systems.
