If you’ve ever worked with glass, you know the feeling. One second everything is fine, and the next—snap. You’ve got a crack right through the middle because the temperature jumped too fast. Glass is finicky. If you hit a cold piece with sudden, uncontrolled heat, it’s going to break. That’s why we lean on single tube infrared lamps for “instant tempering.” They give us the kind of control we need to keep the glass from panicking. The secret is in the speed. Most heating elements are slow. They take forever to warm up and even longer to cool down. But a quartz infrared tube? It hits its operating temperature almost instantly. When you pair these lamps with an SCR or a PWM controller, you can throttle the power in milliseconds. It’s a huge advantage. Instead of a heat blast, you can gently ramp up the temperature as the glass moves into the zone. This keeps the surface from expanding way faster than the core, which is exactly how you avoid those dreaded thermal shocks. Getting the heat where it actually matters We usually go with shortwave emitters here. Why? Because shortwave radiation actually penetrates deep into the glass. You don’t want the heat just sitting on the “skin” of the product; you want it soaking in. Plus, using a single-tube setup means you can place the emitters exactly where the heat load is the heaviest. It’s a much more surgical approach. One quick tip: keep an eye on your voltage drops. If you’re running long banks of these tubes, make sure your power supply can handle that initial surge of current when they kick on. The messy side of things Here is the catch: high-density infrared heating is tough on the quartz envelope. In a real plant, things get dusty. If a tiny piece of grit lands on a hot tube, it creates a hot spot. That’s usually when the quartz fails. You’ve got to be religious about keeping the tubes clean. And for heaven’s sake, make sure your cooling fans are actually working. If your sockets overheat, you’ll find yourself replacing lamps every few weeks. If you do it right, those lamps should last for thousands of hours.
